required equipment for scout camp

PLEASE NOTE! Our Base Camp quartermaster, as of 2010, is equipped with all necessary items. Students may check out gear from the quartermaster the first day of camp if needed. If budget is tight do not buy LOTS of stuff, stick to the basics (skillet/cookware/utensils). The following list is recommended for students and provided to help them acquire necessary outdoor gear for year round, personal pursuits in the outdoors. Thank you.

Scout Camp 1 (basics)

1.) Day pack, small

2.) Water bottle

3.) Do Bok (martial arts uniform if you have one)

4.) FTU (field training uniform)- loose, comfortable, soft colors, rugged. Best recommended combination is multi-pocket pants and hooded sweatshirt or light fleece, layered over a t-shirt (tee for warmer hours). Brown, tan, gray, green, etc. Should include belt for proper tucked in shirt fit and utilities such as knives or other pouches.

5.) Rain gear, poncho type fine - avoid the cheap saran wrap emergency type

6.) Head gear (hat with rim); good for rain and sun

7.) pocket knife, small

8.) scrap metal for those choosing blacksmithing; also any protective eq such as earplugs and safety goggles. i will have some here but its always nice to have your own earwax in your ear.

9.) For those that have them; paintball markers and protective equipment, airsoft with protective eq, air rifles/BB guns - must be checked in with director upon arrival, thanks!

10.) swim gear, includes water shoes (tennis ok if SPARE pair), sandals with closed toe acceptable

11.) sleep gear (we have extras of everything, but who knows what you'll get!) sleeping bag, PJ's, etc

12.) Positive, open minded attitude and willingness to be a leader and example

13.) Pen or pencil and 3-ring notebook for notes and handouts

14.) Eating utensils; bowl, plate, fork, spoon, cup - it's nice to have a mesh bag for them but not necessary.

15.) camping type or snack foods for day trips and nights out on the mountain

16.) Headlamp or small light with red lense option

17.) Duffel or water tight box/storage for all items listed

18.) clothing considerations; extra socks, underwear, three t-shirts, two pants (both may be FTU type for woods travel)

19.) If you have them; extra rope/cord and a tarp.

* shorts not recommended for any activity out of water

Scout Camp II (advanced)

NOTE:keep in mind that the 'adventure' component may have eq limitations such as "only what you made yourself", just be aware that hand made items are always welcome and appreciated and old primitive things are neat if you have them.

All of the above gear plus the following;

1.) Larger pack for week long camp; 'backpacking pack' best, duffel ok

2.) waterproof container or bags if you have one

3.) sandals / water shoes

4.) as many power bar type snacks as you can get. The BEST ones are called 'think organic', 'maya', and 'lara' bars. They are available at Amazing Savings grocery on sweeten creek rd. (exit 51 off 40, drive right toward biltmore store on right). A.S. in Swannanoa MAY have them also. These are all organic, whole foods with NO sugars or nutritional by products as found in most power bars. The normal brands also get really old after a day or two.

5.) pack with following clothing considerations; extra socks, underwear, three t-shirts, two pants (both may be FTU type for woods travel)

6.) Stalking clothes; can be FTU, emphasis on subtle colors and quiet cloth.

7.) -removed-

8.) Personal fire initiator

9.) candle (this is important)

10.) craft project items; bamboo, sewing, leather, etc, your choice! we will also gather plenty.

11.) Warm Jacket and toboggan/beanie hat recommended!

12.) Personal food items allowed but no candy. MRE's are good but as Gobert says, "A nutritional nightmare". I like them anyway.

13.) Any personal outdoor gear is ok too, like compass and map, or stove, or whatever.

14.) personal weapons welcome but must be checked in with director upon arrival, any firearms will be stored in locked safe

* Please check back regularly for updates
