Scout Camp - Highland Scout Camp is the flagship program of our school and truly represents what we do and teach year round. Students develop a relationship with the natural world while learning living history, mountaineering, and physical fitness. All ages and experience levels welcome.

Scout Camp I - two weeks available, early summer

Scout Camp II - Advanced camp, mid summer

Hunter's Moon Scout Camp - 4 days in Fall, harvesting, hunting, mountain adventure and as always expert wilderness training.

Winterfire Scout Camp - 5 days to explore the Appalachians without snakes, bees, spiders, or undergrowth. Learn from Spencer Two Dogs what it takes to survive and thrive in the heart of Winter.

Appalachian Living History - Interwoven throughout the year in camps, mountaineering treks, and in specific continuing education courses for outdoor leaders and lifelong students, our classes in living Appalachian History are hands on and comprehensive in nature. Tracking and awareness are focal points for learning in the outdoors. Broken into chapters each subject covers basic, intermediate, and advanced skills on a curriculum designed by educators. Skinning, blacksmithing, woodworking, log cabin construction, trapping, clothesmaking, tool crafting, use, and care, animal training and husbandry, and many other topics are included. For a more complete list of skills visit the U.S. Civil Ranger Corps at www.civilranger.com LOTSMA is a patron of the NC Wildlife Resources Commission and upholds all state and federal conservation laws.

Check Calendar for upcoming day clinics on above topics.

Mountaineering - Throughout the year students participate in backpacking and wilderness excursions as part of their regular training. While these trips are voluntary, some belt levels in our martial arts program have requirements that can only be met by completing certain activities - activities done on our adventures! Boating safety is covered on lakes and rivers and foot travel takes us to rugged peaks. Students work through the manual which includes such topics as first aid, winter travel, weather reading, shelters, knots, map and compass, rock climbing and solo time outdoors. Students learn which plants are available at different times of the year and make new friendships during these trips. Requirements are similar to Boy Scout merit badges. Courses are open to the public. LOTSMA is a patron of the NC Wildlife Resources Commission and upholds all state and federal conservation laws.

Sailing - Mr. Bolejack was raised a sailor and believes it to be one of the highest of the warrior arts! Students have the opportunity to learn about such basics as rigging and wind fundamentals and eventually begin to tack, gybe, and ride the wind. Most classes are taught using a Hobie Catamaran 16 so techniques on the trapeze, flying hulls, and advanced high wind management are included as well. These classes are held on weekends and during some scout camps and are available to anyone.

Marksmanship - Marksmanship teaches discipline, responsibility, attention to detail, focus under pressure, and citizenship history. Instruction is available from beginner to LE and Mil operators. Topics include cleaning, safe handling and care, fundamentals of riflery, musketry, as well as special courses in handloading and hunting. Younger students begin with airsoft or air rifles and graduate up to the .22 LR by qualification. Marksmanship includes bowmanship and may progress into advanced studies such as horse mounted archery. LOTSMA regularly donates time to active duty personnel. *Certain instruction may require a criminal check, valid CCH, character reference, and/or prior service (form DD214 if applicable).
