Sailing Adventures of Captain Spencer and "Rush!"

Update Fall '08: Right now I am working on this site and planning a summer camp addendum called "Ninja Sail Camp". Sean and I are watching the weather for a late Fall lake trip and would love to capture flying a hull in the snowon video. We have a heated lake nearby that feeds a power plant that may make it more possible! Stay tuned.

My Dad is researching opening a sailing rental business in Jamaica with his larger 30 foot sailboat as well as Hobie Cats.

The purpose of this Sailing portal is to inspire others to get out there and live, do something you love, now, while you can. If you are unable, let it be a shared memory, something to pick you up and let you take a vicarious trip through the eyes and words of others. If you are out on the water then this is an affirmation that we are out there too, and love it as you do.

Achievements I've made so far in my sailing life are humble, but they are achievements. No round the world trips or national championships, but I have been in the ocean, and I have raced.

I went solo in the Atlantic by age 15 on a Hobie, have sailed Key West waters, and almost got killed in high surf storms that made the whole sea white with breaking waves, alone. I have capsized the day before hurricane Charley landed at Oak Island - with no life jacket, and spent hours on a glass-calm sea watching sunsets. I have camped off of boats traversing wilderness lakes, won a 1st place trophy in a large regatta, and have found the hidden Bird Island on the Cape Fear river delta on a Hobie 16. I have taken a boat apart in the water to save her, under power lines, out of breath, next to a roaring electric plant. In retrospect these all make for good stories though some I could have lived without.

Things I would like to accomplish boat-wise are; continue to make sailing films for the public of fantastic voyages large and small, sail a ship to the Carribean Sea with family, Cat Sail off of Jamaica and rent rides or boats from the beach. I have always wanted to make an Atlantic seaboard endurance trek on a small craft such as a Hobie and may well race again on a grander scale. We will see. Here's the record of my journey, come along for the ride. Want to join me? Send a note, address below.

"Search for Bird Island", 16 minute movie with music. Documents a 2008 trip on the Cape Fear, NC.

"What a Rush!" The dream, purchase, retrieval, and total restoration of a 1985 Hobie called "Rush". 10 minute video of still pictures catalogues the journey from dead hulls to razor shine, the first launch, and some nice beach photography. Project completed in 2007.

"Installing a 4" Port on a H16", brief video depicting the installation of an inspection port in a fiberglass hull.

"Advanced Camp 2008" Students and myself onboard various craft took to a wilderness lake with 290 miles of coastline and row/paddle/sailed camping along the way. Gallery includes some nice nature photography, swimming, sailing, and underwater shots.

"Scout Camp 2008" Lake trip photos. Scout Camp is a general action oriented camp, here students learn sailing basics on a mountain lake.

"Lake Glenville, 2008" - The first weekend of sailing that my Dad and I had separate boats. We raced the day before but that footage has mysteriously disappeared, really :( Nice photography of colored Hobie sails on mountain water.
